A STRESS-FREE GUIDE TO DISTRESSING

Chaddock’s critical wood finishing step called “distressing” elevates a furniture design from average to extraordinary.

Distressing is the by-hand artisan process that adds character, nuance and depth to the finish of new wood furniture. Chaddock’s distressing process enhances the unique and intrinsic characteristics of individual wood species, teasing out wood’s natural beauty and preparing it for our multi-step finishing process. Pick, chain loop, chisel and rock, Chaddock artisans use a variety of tools to achieve just the right look. Your look!

WHAT'S YOUR LEVEL OF DISTRESS?

In all, Chaddock offers five levels of distress. We call the first “no distress.” That said, it’s not pristine or perfect. Wood is a natural product, after all! Light wisps or cow tailing, marks and graining will be present – and appreciated!

distressing1
MINIMAL CHAIN
Minimal Chain creates a clean luminous finish with a hint of wispy cow tailing or weathering. The finish beautifully hangs up where the light chain strikes, adding character and dimension.
distressing3
LIGHT DISTRESS
A popular distress level choice, Light Distress creates a natural weathered look great for today’s homes. Light gouges are introduced to reveal the inner beauty of the wood.
distressing4
MEDIUM DISTRESS
Designers love Medium Distress. It evokes the feeling of a beloved antique. In addition to cow tailing and light gouging, scoring - carved incisions - is introduced.
distressing5
HEAVY DISTRESS
All artisan tools and techniques are at play with Heavy Distress. Cow tail wisps, gouges, worm holes and scoring are orchestrated to create the look and feel of an heirloom.
